This may be a bit off-thread but Opera browser has a "kiosk" mode that runs without any window decoration (and uses "spatial nagivation" i.e. shift+cursorKey movement jumps to the nearest hyperlink in that chosen direction). Could Opera be launched from freevo and do what you want ?
Opera seem quite keen on the TV/browser combination (see their iTV link) ....
