I have an Athlon XP 2200+ and I use mencoder as you do. But not eveybody
has. So if you have a Pentium 200 and a Matrox G400 card, it is enough
for watching DivX and MPEG(1), but not for encoding in software.
However, the top of the top is to use a DVB card, and get the data
already encoded in MPEG2 on your HDD :) But MPEG2 from DVB uses a
720x576 resolution and high quality, so the files are quite big, too
(1GB ~= 1h).
