I record as a straight Mpeg2 file from my pvr-250 and then the shows I want to keep I transcode to divx. cince I am going from Mpeg2 to divx I can transcode using a 2 pass encoding and end up with a better file that is smaller than you can get with live recording to divx.
I transcode by hand, I'm hoping that in the future there will be a freevo plugin to do this like mythTV has already... I.E. the files in the recorded directory that are older than 10 days and have not been watched are automatically transcoded and stored in a different directory. or to transcode the files when hard drive space becomes tight.

I'm using Freevo with a Miro PCTV. When I'm recording my tv using mencoder 1.0pre3 (640x480), my celeron 2Ghz is used at 50% and my stream is made under DivX format with a great quality.
I've tried using a WinTv PVR 250, my processor is obsviously not used but the size of the output-file is to big !
What is the real advantage of such solution ? I prefer see my processor running at 50% but produces a smaller outputfile.
