actually to make it easier to you... I found my command that I use here on a
legal pad I was using for notes...


mencoder inputfile.mpg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=1 -oac copy -o
outputfile.avi
mencoder inputfile.mpg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vpass=2 -oac copy -o
outputfile.avi


there is a whole section in the mplayer documentation on it.

I use mencoder. download and read the documetation on mencoder on how to transcode from one format to another. if you want to you can convert the file to almost anything.
