This plugin works fine for me, unfortunately the quality of the picture doesn't event come close to the real thing, i.e watching tv directly (using the tv!!!, remember .. that's what we used to do).
Right. You're on the right track modifying IVTV_OPTIONS to increase the bitrate. Perhaps we should always assume highest quality with live tv, or have a LIVE_IVTV_OPTIONS (default to high quality). Some machines will have difficulty playing back high quality mpeg2 as well.
IIRC yuv support for these cards isn't finished yet (correct me if I'm wrong) but eventually we could have plain live tv (mplayer tv:// or tvtime) with yuv and timeshifting with mpeg.
