That won't work if the movie tracknumber is say 28. The problem with mplayer is that is doens't 'work out' for itself what is the longest track on the dvd..
If you wan't to contribute something to freevo, maybe changes your code to use mmpython to detect the longest track, and default to playing the longest track on the dvd? What you have there (yes, i have not read it, i'm invering fromlogic.. hope i'm right ;-) is code to say if numtracks = 1, play track one. else do nothing.. what you would need is a tupple/list of tracks and lengths from mmpython, at that point to go: get longest track. play longest track.
