Try to put to freevo_config.py this in the mplayer options:
MPLAYER_AO_DEV   ='alsa -ac hwac3,mad,mp3,pcm -aop list=resample:fout=44100

the aop option should be what you are looking for....
It works for me. I had some movie at 48kHz and couldn`t get the sound so I use this 
and it resample it to 44.1kHz and it works fine..
