Thanks to all those who commented.  Now I'm even more confused than before ;-).

Choosing a distro is like choosing a car, some like brand X, some like brand Y, some want good miles/galon, others want big cars (ie. SUV's)
You can listen to a hundred people and they'll all recommend a different distro.
There is only one way to be sure that you like a distro: use it. (In contrast to cars, trying distro's is free!)

Tha fact that i'm using matrox hardware kinda means I *have* to
compile the kernal anyway.  This in itself is not a joyous thing for
me, especially on a new system as It wlaways takes me about 5 compile
and recover attempts to remember all the 'special' changes I had to
make to get not just my matrox running, but the usb hacks to get my
dvico card's usb remot working, and the special hacks required to get
my usb dvd burner working, and the special hacks to get my dvico dvb
card working also.  All of which so far (in the last 2 years at least)
still haven't made it into a mainstream build.

Do yourself a favour, make a CD which contains all the patches you need and the .config of the kernel and label it "Required Linux patches for kernel X.Y.Z". And throw it in the safe (or if you're like me, the drawer)

No one voted for it, debian sarge got one vote and slackware got 2.  I
won't be using debian as I've heard most of my hardware is even harder
to get going than with a gnereal linux distro.

I'm confused, you think that Slackware is easier to use than Debian? Either a lot has changed since I last used Slackware, or you are wrong ;-)

[..] my shitty hardware :(. [..]

Isn't this your problem? And not the distro?

Wander.
