Of course we can! :)
Playing with it a bit more, I discovered that Piren Beta 1 is unable to
play any sound, nor to enable TV watching. This because I stripped out
the kernel package, and all the modules with it.
Soon I will release the Beta 2: my goal is to publish the most complete
version available, but it has to fit within 128 Mb: this goal can be
reached without trouble, also adding live-initramfs, lirc, rsync,
mencoder, piren-*.deb and all the dependencies.

Because I'm lazy. Jokes apart, you are completely right on this point.
The main reason is that Piren is made to be customized. My suggestion
is to run Piren, configure it, made a DSL package (tar.gz file) of all
the new created or modified files.
For the ASUS Digimatrix version, I supply a new inittab that enables
a lonely root login on tty9 within the DSL package.
Adding live-initramfs (a Debian fork of Casper) will automatically
create a regular user on boot, so I can start freevo without even the
need of a root login.

If you like Debian, I think that live-initramfs is a good starting
point. :)
