Tanya, I'm running freevo with exactly this setup (G400, directfb
mplayer / freevo output). I've also got the SNES emulator working with
directfb as well for some old-school gaming goodness...

Exactly. If you load the matroxfb_maven module, then directfb can't
take control of the hardware from userspace, since the kernel module
has got its hands on it.

I have the same problem: Whenever anything breaks my wife turns to me
and says "You've been upgrading it again haven't you?"  Fortunately,
nothing's gone wrong recently :)

I think I've posted my directfb / freevo settings to the freevo lists
in the past, so you can just search for them, or prod me & I'll post
the current versions when I get a chance (The box in question is off
at the moment & I'm not anywhere near it.)
