this helps me
1) get a php.ini file into the vs /etc directory
2) in /etc/php.ini - add an extension_dir= path as follows:
extension_dir= /usr/lib/php4
3) in /etc/php.ini - add a line to load the mysql.so dynamically
extension= mysql.so
