(Said with sheepish grin on face...)
Ok, my problem was two fold... 
        #1 - In installing the update several times between the source and rpm, it had
created something like 8 virtuald entries in inetd.conf :(  This I hadn't
realized... 
        #2 - (and makes #1 even more stupid on my part) I had done as I had done with
1.4.5 and kept telnet alive on the host server... So Damion was correct below...
I could never telnet into the host with 1.4.5 unless I bypassed that part of the
script, and renabled it... Well, just goes to show, I should have had more faith
in the developers :), cause it works like a champ when ya do it the way its
supposed to be... 

Thanks for all the replies... Hopefully I get to build the 7.1 this weekend and
try the updates :P
