Yes they are leased servers but I have control over them. As far as rpm's go, 
I've always preferred using tarballs (comes from being an old OS/2 user and 
liking to see what I'm doing). I'm not worried about booting with a new kernel 
remotely - had to do this anyway so as get quotas and stuff in it. Sendmail, 
Bind and others of that ilk are all upgraded now, so the only question really in 
my mind is: will a kernel 2.4.x break something in basic dependencies in RH6.2
and fail to boot?

I've searched kernel.org, redhat and Google without finding a proper answer.
OK, I do have a Linux partition on this OS/2 box, so I'll test it here and then 
report back for anyone who's interested.
