questions:

If you mean running a process within a VS as a user with group root, this
would be OK as long as the process did not open up any root exploits. For
instance, would there be a configuration file that admin could access which
could manipulate the behaviour of the process in such a way as to provide
the admin with root priviliges or affect hosting server/other virtual server
configuration.

Purely historical reasons. The ISP that originally developed freeVSD has a
preference for some of the features offered by ProFTP, so it was patched to
operate with freeVSD. With an ftp server already present there hasn't been a
priority to integrate wu-ftpd as well. (It is the same reason that sendmail
is supported whereas qmail is not, yet...)
