A read timeout probably means vsd itself has crashed and you should see an
entry in /var/log/messages indicating an inetd (xinetd?) process has exited
with an error...

The error you describe could mean all is not well in your vsd.conf and
something it contains is killing off vsd. Compare its contents to a vsd.conf
on a system which you know works and see if there are any suspicious
differences.

Also, before trying to create a vs, just see if vsd is running and handling
requests properly by issuing a vsdadm vs_details command to the hosting
server...

I am afraid that we do not test freeVSD on Mandrake and you can expect
problems before you get everything up and running. If you can get back to us
with the problems you have encountered and any workarounds I would be happy
to start integrating them into the source tree to properly support
Mandrake..
