Hi to all the friends of the list.
As the subject suggests, we should talk about this issue. If the list is
ever taken down by Idaya, contact me directly with the word "FreeVSD" in the
subject and I'll set up a mailing list on one of my servers.
So let's start with the facts.
FreeVSD has been released under the GPL. Being an open source project, it
was developed by the open source community. The project was partially funded
by Idaya, which has benefited from the rest of the community.
I myself, have been following the development of FreeVSD since it's early
days and I have contributed many patches and hints and help to other users
(check the archives ;-)
I have never received any payment for my work nor I have asked for one. I've
been working on *OUR* project to that *ME* and the *OTHERS* would benefit
from it.
Now Idaya is trying to lock down the source and release the product that has
been developen by *us* as their *own* product, ignoring the GPL license and
the rules set by the Free Software Foundation.
The GPL License states clearly:
b) You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in
whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any
part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third
parties under the terms of this License.
and further: "These requirements apply to the modified work as a whole. "
further: "....the intent is to exercise the right to control the
distribution of derivative or collective works based on the Program."
So, until there's a single piece of code which is GPL, Idaya is forced to
release it. I'm sure that the FSF can be of good *legal* help here.
I myself feel robbed of the time and energy spent on FreeVSD.
