I have been using Gmail for about 5 years now, and have found it to interface
very nicely via IMAP with Thunderbird, Mail.app, and my iPhone 3G. As far as I
know, Gmail does have a full IMAP interface. The only reason I use Mail.app is
because of its integration with other OS X apps, and the fact that half the
time my internet connection here is down, so it's nice to be able to look
through my mail archives without being connected. I don't particularly like the
web interface, as it displays nested folders as tags with embedded slashes
(e.g. Friends/SantaFe/FRIAM), and only dedicates a very small width to display
them. With deeply nested folders, it shows up as Friends/Sant... or something
ridiculous. Maybe I just need to stop using so many deeply nested folders...
