Ok, let me be concrete. Consider GNU Autoconf or CMAKE. They are just a part the morass, even though they aim to cope with it. They wouldn't exist but for the morass. Huge amounts of effort go into maintaining and using these tools, and really nothing inherently valuable comes of it. It would have all been unnecessary had it not been for the swamp people, like the client Doug mentioned. Stand for something, or fall for nothing man.
