Thanks for the links Jochen...

A little online noodling discovers that the US OASI (old age and survivors) benefits (social security) runs about  $1T/income and US digital nomadism currently represents about $2.5T/yr income which might be a solid 10% of the US GDP.

If half of the (as per electorate) were to "take their ball and go abroad" that would be a significant (but not debilitatating) drain from the US economy?  *new* digital nomads (as well as existing) seem likely to be more represented among progressives? I'm not fully aware of the taxation implications but the *domestic spending* that moves out-of-country seems significant.

Best I can tell, current rules don't disenfranchise ex-patriots as long as they maintain US citizenship while living/working abroad...  though a major move to this could lead the masterGerryMander-VoteSuppression caucus to revise those rules/policies/laws.  Wouldn't it reslly gripe some red-hatted asses if blue-hearted retirees and tech workers moved their voting addresses to Red unto Purple locales and then promptly took their money abroad?

I can imagine various countries seeking these $$ to flow into their economies...  but with threats of the AMOC overturning it's not clear where one wouldn't just be wandering into the jaws of "climate change".

My parents "fled" Appalachia post WWII for opportunities in the West and their ancestors "fled" Europe at various times for the opportunities in "the New World"... so I suppose it isn't to "unpatriotic" to flee the "Greater Nazi Reich" (PK Dick) or "Gilead" (Atwood).

At 17 I was prepared to "flee" the country that was dead set on turning me into a killer (or get me killed by someone as innocent as I) for what was becoming more and more obvious a misbegotten geopolitical move, nothing like what it was sold as.  Then I felt obliged to "never come back" since it felt like I was "abandoning" my country.   Today, my allegences are a bit broader (all humans/life/self-organizing-systems/all-one)?

FWIW I'm not actively shopping for a new country but am more understanding of those who are contemplating such in their "fight or flight" response.

If you think about leaving a future Trumpistan then the following article might be interesting. Forbes lists countries welcoming Americans with open arms: Spain, Italy, France, and Canada are among them

I believe Australia, Ireland and New Zealand are also good choices simply because of the language.
