May I question this? What would be the big difference to saying

/path/to/configure --prefix=/install/path
make
make install

without a "target" directory during "make" time?

Basically "make install" would create the "target" directory in any
place you like. And if DESTDIR would work (which I currently don't know)
one could even have different installs without the --prefix to the
configure script.
