You did not answer my question about 'pmatrix'. And in general
it seems that you replace portable (common to plain TeX and
LaTeX) constructs by LaTeX specific ones. So there is
obvious loss of portablity (if anybody would with to restore
TeX support you make the job harder). OTOH you say nothing
about advantages, so it remains for me to investigate and
it takes time...
