The solution to your problem depends on how your kernel is configured. 
In Windows you have Drivers and all that kind of stuff. In linux it is 
the same deal, yet it is a little bit different because the user is 
left with more freedom to configure his/her system. If you wanna get 
you network card going there are a few steps involved:
0) Get the type and name of you network card (if possible)
1) Find out whether you have a "module" for it on you computer installed
     ....load the module (e.g. with modprobe)
1.1) get your dynamic IP address  (on Debian 'pump' works best)
1.2) Test your card by pinging e.g. 'truman.edu'
3) if you don't have a module for it you should recompile the Kernel -- 
since it is the "heart" of the  operating system you just might wanna 
come to the InstallFest.
