I was just wondering if any one has tried to convince truman to move some lab computers over to linux? Personally, I would love to be able to use linux lab computers. Or at the very least use open office on campus.
Is OpenOffice on the image these days? Getting something like that is the best bet for change. They put FireFox on the image, so they are at least open to the idea.
I personally consider it HIGHLY unlikely any of the official lab computers are switched to linux. MTCS has some thin clients in VH2001, and you can VNC/SSH to Kronos/Gaia/Mercury, so it's not like there's a complete lack on campus. Switching lab computers to linux would mean more training for lab workers and other IT staff....more images to maintain...more time spent with adminstration (since they use SMS to mass-update the Windows boxes)...and a lot of other things that aren't necessarily quantifiable. Don't think that ITS is against linux....a lot of the IT staff would totally agree with you that it would be great to have linux lab computers, but especially with the drastic budget cuts, I wouldn't expect too many changes to come about. (Don't bother with the "see but linux saves money because it's free! budget crisis solved!" because Truman has sitewide licensing long-time paid for and so switching any computers to linux would COST money in time.)
