I was never a serious fan of Compiz - I feel Metacity Built-in
Compositing is enough for me (window shadow effect is handy to know
which window is active). But normally I don't have any kind of effect
turned on whatsoever for responsiveness. Now Flash and Firefox for
Ubuntu is about on-par or just a little bit slower with which for
Windows, but it's not a huge gap anymore.

BTW, about the OLPC issue, will it be any more luck to try installing
from an USB stick? I am very pleased with the ability to install those
kinds of stuff from USB sticks especially with fast ones (aka
ReadyBoost-ready), it is really *fast* (and never get scratched). So it
is actually pretty cool to have yourself a USB stick loaded with *toys*.
Put Ubuntu, Slax, GRUB boot disk, NTPasswd *and* Vista on a 4GB one and
you're set. Who needs CD Drives?
