BTW, about the OLPC issue, will it be any more luck to try installing
from an USB stick? I am very pleased with the ability to install those

I tried that first. There are 2 sets of instructions, one for installing with a disk image from a USB stick:

http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1435.0

and another with compressed files:

http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1436.0

when I tried the disk image from USB, I became stuck at the stage of moving the important files from the XO, but this probably just is because I don't speak linux very fluently.

And then there is this thread on the differences between installing a disk image vs. compressed files:

http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1629.0

and it says that to use a windows-readable filesystem I would have to use compressed files, but I don't understand the implications of that. If, for example, I want to copy files back & forth from a Windows or Mac box, or copy images from my digital camera, do I have to use the compressed files approach?

Thanks--marc.
