I think a mention-worthy news is GEM in 2.6.28 is very promising. When configured right (with newer Xorg and AccelMethod=UXA) it doubled my FPS from <100FPS to >200FPS when using glxgear -info. But UXA is unstable and the screeen blacked sometimes so just don't try it on your production machine. Flash movies are still laggy and jerky though.
