Scott,
How does this relate to projectors. Should the gateway value be
hard coded inside the exe using the gatewayUrl or defaultGatewayUrl.

I can get webs pages to work no problem by not specifying the gatewayUrl
inside the Flash and passing them as params from the HTML page.

Yes,

the include files work much like CFIMPORT in coldfusion mx, in that the
compiler grabs the needed files and converts the logic to byte code.
(Grab an AS viewer to see how a SWF is really made up, its quite
interesting) and its not as layed out as it looks i the IDE.

As for setDefaultGateway...

Note: If you specify localhost as the host in the setDefaultGatewayURL
method, and you run your Flash application from outside the Flash
development environment or stand-alone Flash player, Flash Remoting MX
does not use localhost as the default gateway host. Instead, it replaces
localhost and any port specified in the setDefaultGatewayURL method with
the host and port specified to run the Flash application. For example,
if you specify http://localhost/flashservices/gateway in the
setDefaultGatewayURL method and start your Flash application by using
the URL http://apps.mycompany.com:8500/flashapps/myapp.swf in a web page
or browser, Flash Remoting MX uses
http://apps.mycompany.com:8500/flashservices/gateway as the default
gateway URL.

I generally pass in the gateway as an argument, I also usually if its
sensitive use CFC's to block person(s) from accessing methods on CF that
i don't care to be made public. (Using the setCredentials to authenticate).

Alternative is to use XML packet to initialize the SWF (Which is another
common trick)

Heres an Article I did way back, on Remoting:
