Yep, best to approach companies directly if you can. Better for the company and you rate wise.
Trouble is, some blue chip companies (if you want to work with them directly) only go through agents I think. I would never have got a great, long Flash design/dev contract last year with Nokia if I hadn't gone through the agent to get it.

Why do you go to a realestate agent when you sell your house? Because they
are suposed to get as much as possible for the house for you.

Why do companies go to recruitment agencies? So they can get the cheapest
people to do the job.

I agree with john. Tell them how much you want. If they dont budge then
they are not worth worrying about

How much do you pay for a plumber is Sydney? More that $40ph I'm sure.

While there are people around prepared to work for $25ph, clients and
agencies don't have a lot of motivation to pay a reasonable rate.
