I have no real issue with your proposal. I think it is deeply impractical but I 
hate travel anyway.

Yes, and that'd be an entirely good thing.  There's far too much pointless (and 
expensive, and energy-wasting, and...) air travel in the US.  So one way to 
help Israel-like security work in this US (at least as far as scale goes) would 
be to cut out 95% of air travel.  No more conferences, no more business 
meetings: use telecommunications instead.  It is, after all, one of the reasons 
we built this series of tubes.

Note that as a side effect this would correspondingly reduce the air travel 
target surface.  Of course given the immense size of the overall target 
surface, the benefits of this might be largely psychological rather than real.

Of course, even if scalability issues were addressed, in this fashion or in 
some other, there are *other* remaining issues to be dealt with if such 
measures are to be used here.
