Yep, there were list problems the other day. They've been acting up a bit
over the last week and I've finally dealt with them (I hope). Here's what's
happening:
Doubles - When a message is sent to the list, it is 'duplicated' once for
each person on the list. If that duplication is stopped in the middle, when
it is restarted it goes from the beginning. I got 3 copies of a few messages
myself, so it was a global thing rather than limited to a few individuals.
Usually its much more limited.
Speed - The list has been getting a LOT of badly formatted email packets.
This is really getting to be a pain and I've emailed the up-servers about
them. We saw this last week with the stoneage email and that was at least
getting to the list. Other packets are even more deadly. Another speed issue
is built into security. I altered the list a week or two back to stop ALL
relaying. This means that posts can go to the list ONLY if the recipient is
local to House of Fusion or a list. This is a major anti-spam thing. I also
set blocking for a number of spammers on the server. These combine to give
the list a bit of a slowdown even of normal posts. If you get a 5-10 minute
delay in post to receipt, that's why.
Future - I've looked over IMS and Lyris. I really like IMS but it doesn't
have a solid listserver package at the moment. I like IMS and would use it
(and probably will as a mailserver) but can't use if for the list. As such,
I'm going to try and move over to Lyris. The only problem is that Lyris
costs $4500 for what we want.
I'm currently recovering from losing everything in stock and will not be
able to get this together myself. For this reason, I'm asking any in the
community who would like to contribute to do so by using Paypal or mail. I'm
actually going to have a proposal to Allaire about corporate funding for
Fusion Authority as well, but....
