Heh.. Definately (Michael are you out there?:)
I suggested this on CF-Talk yesterday but im not sure
it ever made it through. A P5-200 with a fair amount
of ram handled a whole bunch of lists at an old ISP
running Majordomo (The entire ISP's client base) which
was enourmous plus serveral real active lists the ISP
maintained..
Runs on most any *nix platform, and is free with tons
of cool web interfaces and FAQ's and instructions.. its
free and its not expensive like lyris :)
I stand behind Majordomo as being scalable and cool since
its free, it can run with quite a few mailers, including
Qmail which is my fav *nix mail handler.
I suppose it will take a little more footwork setting up
if you are not real familiar with Unix. It took me about
one evening to setup my own small list server including
configuring the SMTP server, YMMV but it was pretty painless.
Hotmail uses Qmail for all its outgoing mail.. so it leaves
little doubt in my mind as far as scalability is concerned
for the SMTP server. From Qmail ;)
"On a Pentium under BSD/OS, qmail can easily sustain 200000 local messages
per day---that's separate messages injected and delivered to mailboxes in a
real test!"
Impressive ;) And its all pretty simple to set up. Anyhow
just my 3 cents ;)

The best linux listserv FREE software is majordomo. It is very popular
and very powerful. I have been on many list that use it an with a few
exception been very happy with the way they work.(most of those problems
tend to be from new versions that introduced new bugs as always wait for the
first patch be for installing new software). I have not set up majordomo
but I know there are many how-tos on it. It can be found at
http://www.greatcircle.com/majordomo/ it may even ship with REDHAT would be
surprised if it did not.(custom install may be required.)

I'm a 100% ignoramus on Linux stuff, but ain't those folks always beating
their chests on how there are FREE tools for what's needed here? Is there
not one amongst us who knows of some freebie Linux tool that could be set up
to meet this need?
