This is veering horribly off topic, but I feel the compulsive need to reply
:)
Last time I checked I could still run a dos program that worked on an 8086
in Windows NT... :-)
It takes a lot of time to phase out old code because you still have
people dependant on these ancient programs who still want to use the
latest and greatest operating systems and servers and still run their
ancient programs.
Same with Mac, no different really.
Whereas, OS/X is truly different from the ground up having
only compatibility layers which allow these programs to run, not
integrating this as a core part of the operating system, thus
not affecting stability.
OS X is a *huge* undertaking its going to be released on the 24th of
march. Apple is under a lot of pressure to get this OS out the door
I bet (just like any release date oriented company/OS) you will
have to sacrifice and release your product with glitches, often
its not who has the better product but who gets there first.
It has all the requirements (now a days) to be successful to the
consumer market. It looks pretty... Hmmn.. that's about it, not
to mention apple is actually trying to make a better operating
system. Having a top notch TCP/IP stack (from BSD) and pulling
some of the best features from this operating system and that and
putting it on some of the better hardware in the world is a
winning combination IMO.
I say give it time and you will see this platform become ultra
stable and actually useful within another year.
In the mean time here is my tie-in to ColdFusion.. (fusebox!@#?#$)
I have successfully ran ColdFusion on a FreeBSD machine using Linux
emulation. It ran perhaps slightly faster than on the same machine
with Linux, but definitely not slower.
So, I know most people would not trust FreeBSD emulating Linux to run
ColdFusion but just for reference, all of the effects in the Matrix
were done using a Linux program running in FreeBSD using Linux emulation.
It is quite stable and fast, and only a handful of programs cant actually
be emulated.
It is not a war either, use what works for you and don't force your
choices on everyone else, just make an informed decision.
Yes it crashed a lot at first, but it was a beta... that's the point
release it let people see your still an alive and breathing company
get feedback on what works, fix it, keep fixing it until it works...
Anyhow, we should stop this thread and take it to a community thread ;)
