Subject: Survey on directory structure usage
I was recently visiting Google ( bless their soul's ) when I stumbled upon a
very interesting technique they were using to structure their search
results. Below is a search I performed looking for "Midi Software":
The page that was returned had the following title on it:
Software
Computers > Multimedia > Music and Audio > MIDI > Software
And interestingly enough, the URL to the page:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Multimedia/Music_and_Audio/MIDI/So
ftware/
The reason I find this interesting is because I had never thought of using
the URL to provide the user with feedback as to their whereabouts in the
site and/or what they were doing (I thought hiding this was actually a good
thing). So I would like to know what peoples thoughts are on using this
technique or if it really only applies to presenting large amounts of
information. Does this kind of structure apply to applications whose
functionality is usually tied to menus?
Normally when I go to a web site I click on links within the page and don't
really pay much attention to the URL, (as it usually contains way too much
information). In Google's case you could almost use your keyboard to
navigate the site...Try it! I just did and its really cool,
F4:http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Multimedia/Music_and_Audio/
F4:http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Multimedia/Music_and_Audio/MIDI
/
F4:http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Multimedia/Music_and_Audio/MIDI
/Software/
The nerd in me says "woohoo!" finally I have "prompt" with which to interact
with and a common set of commands for getting my tasks done:
(hypothetically speaking)
http://services.wohNelly.com/Root/Reference/Category/Programming/Language/Fu
sebox/index.cfm?action=getAuthor&Sort=Asc&LastName=RockHorse
http://services.wohNelly.com/Root/Training/MyEnrollments/CourseName/Section2
/index.cfm?action=startLesson
http://services.wohNelly.com/Root/Training/MyEnrollments/CourseName/FinalExa
m/index.cfm?action=startExam
http://services.wohNelly.com/Root/Training/Registrar/UserMessage/FailureNoti
fication/index.cfm?action=ALL.YOUR.BASE.ARE.BELONG.TO.US
So is this practical or useful? Part of me says it sure seems nerdy...but
another part says it looks cool ;)
Late night ponderings...zzz
