I'd say that's my experience, too. End users tend to fixate on the user
interface, and all that talk about functionality is totally over their
heads.

Now, I've had a blast this week playing with that MindMapper product, and
have used it to beat details out of three different users for three
different apps. Without ever showing them a webpage, I was to dig out of 'em
what the expected actions were for given sets of people "User", "Admin",
etc.

"What does the user do?"
"they review their credit card statement"
"Ok, so under 'User', I can add 'Review Statement'?"
"Yeah."

And so on. Basically, I got the other person to define the major fuseactions
in the app. Now, I couldn't get the FuseMinder app to build out the basic
fusebox for me, so I did it manually. Hm. I've struck out with both
FuseMinder and WireFrame. I think I better take Hal's class; I'm losing
sight of the obvious, I think...

But, back to the topic; I found that MindMapper application (
www.mindmapper.com ) to be a great tool for doing a good case study with a
client without having to get caught up in which shade of red is prettier.
