Back when I first wrote Fuseminder, I surveyed available mind mapping software.
Unfortunately, I couldn't review MindManager because its downloadable trial
installer didn't work. I've tried again; here are some impressions:
- MindManager doesn't give you collaboration a la MindMapper+ unless you spend
the extra $50 for the Business edition. Not critical...
- MindManager is a very nice visual package.
- MindManager's keyboard navigation is lacking for data entry. In Visual Mind
and MindMapper+, you add nodes by selecting the node you want as the parent and
typing. When you hit Enter, a new child node is created. MindManager is much
more complex. Here are the keystrokes required to add three child nodes in
each package:
- VM and MM+: Cart{Enter}Catalog{Enter}Checkout{Enter}
- MindManager: {Insert}Cart{Enter}{Left Arrow}{Insert}Catalog{Enter}{Left
Arrow}{Insert}Checkout{Enter}
- MindManager only has one format for exporting text outlines. In order to use
it with Fuseminder, you'd need to either massage the outline file first, or
bribe Fuseminder's author to support MindManager outlines in a future version.
;>
So, I like MindManager's visual aspects, which are important to Buzan's Mind
Mapping theory, but I don't like its operational aspects, which are more
important for using it in the context of designing Fusebox apps.
