Let's say you have a team of developers all working on ip 127.0.0.1 ...
developer one is using iis and has c:/inetpub/something set as their web
directory ... developer 2 has apache and is using C:/Web as webroot.  The ip
address doesn't pick up on stuff like that.  The only way I know is via the
machine name and that can only be obtained through the registry.
