Still no joy.

If the cfmodule call is in a template in a subdirectory, like:
domain.com/standAloneApp/layoutFiles/

won't it look in that directory if self is only index.cfm rather than
/standAloneApp/index.cfm

thus the need for the
<cfparam name="self" default="/standAloneApp/index.cfm">

I think it might be the mapping, I've contacted crystaltech supprt to check
it for me.

Any other ideas?

self should be just index.cfm

if you are doing mappings then /standAloneApp/ needs to map to
drive:/full/path/to/root/standAloneApp/
