I don't think it's the particular request that caused the responses so much as on 
ongoing trend some of us have 
noticed growing over the last several months (if not years).  It becomes very 
stressful to spend a great deal of time on 
things only to receive demands for more.  Depending on the stress of the day, 
sometimes even the most 
complimentary of requests can seem like a demand.  It's nice to know your material is 
well-received, but it's 
impossible to perpetually give away work.

I note that Hal has not weighed in on this yet (probably because he's just come off 3 
weeks of travel for training and 
consulting, and is now preparing for CFUN02 and more on-the-road jobs).  I'm certain 
that he would probably think 
nothing of producing a PDF, assuming he already has the capability on hand; that's 
just the kind of guy he is.  But 
Steve's point remains valid.

Now, seeing that the material that sparked the discussion is free for public 
consumption thanks to Hal, perhaps the 
question to ask is, "Hal, would it be useful to you if I converted your HTML papers to 
PDF for you to make them 
easier to read and print?"
