Mike - great question.

Our new drop-shadow effect for variable text (we apply this drop-shadow
at composition time) supports 3 modes which you can set from the
"Graphics" tab of the Composition dialogue:

- Standard. This method uses a proprietary FusionPro algorithm that
produces a screen of black dots over your background. These dots appear
in a particular pattern (each dot is actually opaque) that when printed
and viewed gives the appearance of the requested shadow effect on your
print-output. You control the DPI of this effect so you can optimize it
for your workflow.

- PDF soft-mask. This is Adobe's PDF transparency effect that (as you
mentioned) causes difficulties in many print-production workflows due to
there being no means of specifying partial transparency in PostScript
based print-streams. If you have a RIP that supports native PDF
transparency, you can use this method.

- Grayscale. This is a non-transparent shadow that works best for text
that is on a white background. It does, however, produce an interesting
halo-effect when placed on non-white backgrounds. Every
print-production workflow should handle this without a problem due to it
being opaque.

Hope this helps, Mike. The Standard and Grayscale settings should work
best for you.
