Ted,

If your barcode workload warrants it, you could purchase a handheld
scanner for about $300. You would want to get a fairly new model that
can read two-dimensional barcodes including 4State. You want to make
sure that the scanner is 4State capable as this is fairly new technology
and some older models that have been on a shelf for awhile may need to
be updated. Last year, Motorola acquired Symbol Technologies which has a
line of hand held scanners that can connect to the USB port on your
computer.

Subject: [fusionpro] Re: 4State Bar Code (Intelligent Mail)

I took a deep breath and dived into Fusion Pro and tested the OneCode
barcode. Please note that I have not had the output scanned by USPS.
However I did match the output to the RIBBS website encoder tool.

I have a 9 digit Mailer ID. And the encoder on the RIBBS website only
accepts 6 digits.

I put my first 6 digits into the Mailer ID field (into the RIBBS website
encoder). Then I put the last 3 digits of my Mailer ID into the sequence
number field. Pad the sequence number field to make it equal 9 digits.

If you are a 9 digit Mailer ID user, and don't carry over the last 3
digits into the sequence number field, your IMB barcode output will be
incorrect.

Create OneCode Barcode Rule in Fusion Pro.

This is what I did to create and use a OneCode Barcode Rule in Fusion
Pro.

I made sure my Excel CSV file had the following fields:

Track, and Routing.

I am going to re-suggest to double check Track, to make sure it is the
required 20 length field. For my test I have made the Routing field a
complete 11 digit field.

Track:
00 = barcode identifier (OEL)
704 = special services code for standard mail
912345678 = mailer ID number (your actual mailer ID goes here)
000001 = a 6 digit sequence number

Routing:
08520 = 5 digit zip
3702 = the plus 4
77 = the delivery point

If your mailer ID number is a 6 digit number (because you mail more than
10MM annually) then your sequence number is a 9 digit number.

When making the OneCode Barcode Rule in Fusion Pro:

Select Track field, from data base.
Select Routing field, from data base.
Leave the (optional) "Specify a font size other than the default of 10"
blank.
I selected the USPS4CB font that I downloaded from the RIBBS web site.
Do not check "Do you want to override the font tag to turn it off"
In the (optional) "Map the four characters..." make it read "FATD" no
spaces, and no quotes.
Click OK

Create a variable text frame, and open the variable text editor.
For the font, select USPS4CB, 16 point.
Select the OneCode variable created earlier.
Click OK.

When I preview, on screen, I see the barcode represented as a string of
FATD characters. When I compose to output as PDF, I get the Intelligent
Mail Barcode.

It matches the RIBBS website IMB encoder.

Although I have had USPS test the official USPS barcode font using
PrintShop Mail (at 16 point), I have not had USPS scan the output from
Fusion Pro. At some point, my local post office will have the scanning
technology and I won't have to schlep to the BMC to test a font :)
