I disagree with you Eva. SMEs and exportation is my cup of tea. I am
refering especialy to innovative rural enterprises.

A year ago I published (in French) a book on SMEs and the chalenge of
exportation. An in the up-coming issue of the International Journal of
Canadian Studies (Fall 1997: they are late) I will have an article (always
in French. should you can read French, just tell me) untitled: "Some Quebec
SMEs chalenging the globalization".

Hera are some excerpts of the abstract:

For several years, a small number of SMEs had already proven their mettle
on foreign markets. Others would be quick to follow their example with
equal success.Nevertheless, too few Quebec SMEs are capitalizing on the
opportunities inherent in international trade. To encourage more SMEs to
follow the trail blazed by pioneers, the factor of their success must be
clearly identified. The purpose of this research, involving 38 businesses
based in central Quebec, is to achieve a better understanding of these
SMEs. We will show thas SME operators, even the small in size, have acheived
world-class business status whether by innovative nature of their key
products, their production and management processess or their business
strategies. They have won an enviable position on the American market by
exploiting a specific segment, usually associated with what is termed the
"manufacturing complex". Their activity in towns or small cities shows that
entrepreneurship is paticularly alert and not unduly disavantaged by
remoteness from the large cities where the number of companies and the
presence of research centres and information network leaders exert a
synergic effect.

Eva are you familiar with what a niche is all about? Is has nothing to do
with mass production. On the contrary, my enterprises, by finding a niche,
can compete their American counterparts who are plagued with mass
production. The quality of theproducts of my enterprises is superior
exactly becausethey are not into mass production. Nowadays, more and more
consumer have their special request and mass production can not satifay
these. Have you heard about *flexible manufacturing*? I assume you have not.

Hoepefully I am not lecturing you Eva, but as Water Conkrike used to say:
That the way it is.

BTW, weather down here, to-day, is awful like in Nagano where the IOC seems
foul enough to confuse a joint with real hight stimulants products used by
lots of champions...
