Yes, history showed that prohibition of alcohol was a failure.  But
legalization of alcohol _also_ has become a failure:  with the endemic
proliferation of "alcopops", wide-spread binge-drinking from young age
on, etc. ...  Smoking is also increasing among youth, and the drugs are
also being sold to minors.

Obviously, it would be necessary to address the roots of the problem --
the factors that drive people to addiction (to which substance, is of
less importance).  Keyword neurotransmitters...

As with Basic Income (btw it's interesting to see the overlap between
drug proponents and BI proponents on this list), the goal should be to
_minimize_ the number of "crutch" recipients, instead of maximizing it!
What a sad future (a society of limpers, or worse) it would be if the
crutch became the rule rather than the exception.

Btw, the soaring problems with alcoholism in Sweden --since the EU
forced down Sweden's traditionally high alcohol prices-- are yet
another illustration for the idiocy of Free Trade and anything that
comes close to it.
