Very well said, Lawry. I agree with
you, but I would like to know in which countries do you think when you
talk about Third World Culture. My curiosity is due to the fact that Third World
could include Mexico and the Phillipines, with very different ways
of undestanding life, time, work, etc. And, besides, you can find in Spain,
Italy, Greece and France some of the traits that you associate to the Third
World.
I think that Spain and France have
the best (and the worst? I don´t know) of both worlds.

Third World
culture, generally, seems to take life more thoughtfully than
do Industrialized/Western culture. Real issues seem to be more
thoughtfully discussed and attended to. In comparison, Western culture
seems too commercial, materialist, and comsumerist. We too easily accept
hype, self-promotion, deceit and immodesty.
I am also finding that I
like 3rd world music better than American pop.
Western people don't
seem to know how much wealth is enough, so they are on a continuous
treadmill toward acquiring 'more.' It may be that people in the 3rd
world will end up like this, too, as they become more wealthy, but I hope
not. In any case, regardless of whether this happens in the future,
in the 3rd world as it is now I can find values that are more similar to my
own that those of the West.
Of course, this is all general.
There are many exceptions in both worlds to these generalities.
One
of the hopeful signs is that there are individuals in both cultures
who share a growing appreciation for the problems intrinsic to Western
culture, and who are actively searching for alternatives. I would
like to be among them.
Cheers, Lawry

Lawrie,
What is
there about Third World Cultures that makes you prefer them to the
West?

The EU is admitting
3rd world countries -- which is a fine thing to do -- but that does not
transform them into industrial countries. Cypriot PCI and other economic
indicators leave them in 3rd world status, IMHO.
I suppose with the
retirement of Raouf Denktash, Turkish Cyprus may follow, but via the
Cypriot or Turkish route?
Increasingly, BTW, I like 3rd world cultures
over that of the West, so I take little comfort for the Cypriots in
their rush toward European-ness....

Lawry,
Cyprus
(the Greek part) is EU, not 3rd world. Although the difference
is increasingly hard to tell, I
admit.
