For dialogue and for listening to the other it seems that vulgar acts as a barrier. So I favour either common or formal in dialogue and getting to understand the views and values of the other.

Formal, Common and Vulgar. Vulgar often carries the direct meaning while formal carries the social agenda. Calling them a gang is common at least and maybe vulgar although it's very mild vulgar. However it does tie them to some rather famous vulgar boys. The question could be asked whether genuine examination is possible using Formal speech in these days. New Yorkers tend to favor the vulgar. I grew up with the formal. Both the Army and New York City was a bright flash of truth and a breath of honesty. Still vulgar that is too fresh usually has a band odor. It needs seasoning and exceptional artistry to work. I would tend to call the rightwing "warmongers" since the rattle the sabers constantly. Calling them a gang reduces them to common criminals which they may be as well. But listen to Romney and his clique and you hear that the Soviet Union is the greatest current threat to peace. Yes he said "Soviet Union."
