I think Germany didn't intend to arrive at this outcome. There was no
intent to dominate. Benign but nonetheless it seems to be the outcome-the
ability to set the agenda.

It still seems to be the case, though, that Germany wants to redeem itself
for what it inflicted on Europe and Jewry more than half a century ago.
Whatever epigenetic traces of the "might is right" mentality of the
1860-1945 period might remain seem to be very faint in the two young Germans
I know well. They very much want to be regarded as good Europeans. They
regard my scepticism (re the Eurozone) as being unfortunate (to say the
least!). Nevertheless, Western Europe can never be unified unless it has a
minimum of cultural cohesion that's typically a byproduct of nationalistic
warfare (offensive or defensive) or civil war.

One had only got to see Angela Merkel jumping up in her seat with every
German goal (all four of them!) scored in its soccer match with Greece last
night, to realize that she's not going to allow Germans to subsidize the
rest of the Eurozone in any significant quantity for much longer.

The Eurozone faces only two alternatives now. It can only be some sort of
attempt at dictatorial take-over by some newly-concocted Eurozone entity in
order to impose budgetary control on all member governments whatever their
different socio-economic cultures, or it will be an unpeeling of the
Eurozone in one way or another.
