The power brokers with Europe's fate in their hands
Reuters | 02:34 PM,Jun 24,2012 The Editor - Nikolas Blome is one of the
most powerful journalists in Europe. Chief political correspondent and
deputy editor of Bild, continental Europes most widely read daily
newspaper, he commissions stories that attract some 12 million readers.
Few newspapers have been as influential in shaping German public opinion
as the tabloid-style Bild, which has run inflammatory headlines and
colourful front page articles about Greek waste and corruption that are
deeply sceptical of Europes rescue attempts. ..."

All over Europe, immigration is moving in from the political fringes
"Immigration, from being the great unmentionable of British politics, is
turning into the issue that dominates the political agenda. Ed Miliband,
the Labour leader, admitted last week that his party had failed to heed
voters' concerns about the impact of immigration on employment, and on
the provision to native Britons of services such as housing, health and
education. He promised to do something to address those worries,
although he did not say exactly what. But given that New Labour, for
most of its 12 years in power, dismissed anyone who raised concerns
about its dismantling of barriers to immigration as a closet racist, Mr
Miliband's apology constitutes a major U-turn. ..."

It still seems to be the case, though, that Germany wants to redeem
itself for what it inflicted on Europe and Jewry more than half a
century ago. Whatever epigenetic traces of the "might is right"
mentality of the 1860-1945 period might remain seem to be very faint
in the two young Germans I know well. They very much want to be
regarded as good Europeans. They regard my scepticism (re the
Eurozone) as being unfortunate (to say the least!). Nevertheless,
Western Europe can never be unified unless it has a minimum of
cultural cohesion that's typically a byproduct of nationalistic
warfare (offensive or defensive) or civil war.

One had only got to see Angela Merkel jumping up in her seat with
every German goal (all four of them!) scored in its soccer match with
Greece last night, to realize that she's not going to allow Germans
to subsidize the rest of the Eurozone in any significant quantity for
much longer.
The Eurozone faces only two alternatives now. It can only be some sort
of attempt at dictatorial take-over by some newly-concocted Eurozone
entity in order to impose budgetary control on all member governments
whatever their different socio-economic cultures, or it will be an
unpeeling of the Eurozone in one way or another.
