But you forgot to mention the best part of all: Those in power are
genuinely unable to comprehend why those over whom circumstances
have accidented them to have power do not *appreciate* the freedom they have
thereby given them!  

When I was terminated from [unnamed] job, "my" manager offered me
a couple days to think over whether I wanted to resign with n weeks'
severance, or be fired with n/2 weeks' severance.  Said manager seemed
genuinely baffled when I pointed out to [said manager] that this was
no choice at all.  I had committed the new sin of being ungrateful
(fortunately, by that point I had little left to lose, and I *was*
careful to express my demurral very politely and deferentially --
I asked [said manager] to kindly help me understand what I was not
understanding about the opportunity I had been offered, so that
I could appreciate its value to me...).

As I believe the Bible says:

    To those who have much, more shall be given;
    From those who have little, what little they have shall be taken away.
