BBC Radio has just announced that two shortlisted designs to replace the

one third of a mile into the sky and be the tallest building on earth.
For how long I wonder?
From what I've seen of the proposals in the media, they
are some combination of real-estate-business realism and
postmodernist meaningless fantasy.

However, to directly address your question, perhaps AlQaeda,
unlike GeorgeWBush is not stuck in its past. GeorgeWBush
can't get over the fact that "that man once tried to kill my dad",
and he seems willing to destroy the earth to pursue this
idee fixe.
Perhaps AlQaeda will soberly assess the new buildings, and
if they conclude that they are no longer the most
strategic targets (remember that "the Allies" invented
operations research in WWII...), they will apply their
resources to other targets where the ROI will be better.
