Here's a csmonitor article telling how it is still possible in 7 U.S. states to become a lawyer without going thru law school:

I had thought this was no longer possible, at least in New York (one of the 7), where I had read of one such case some 20 years ago, and thought that person was the last one they were going to allow.
I am aware that the following is a different kind of thing, but: I think I have mentioned the case of a friend who is an internationally recognized artist, who nonetheless had "degree envy", and who actually found a university where he was able to earn his master's degree in fine arts by faculty menbers coming and learning from him.
