Yes, indeed.  From when I was very young, I recall people sitting on top of
freight trains.  It was the Great Depression.  My father rode the rods to
get from rural Saskatchewan, where there was no work, to Alberta, where he
worked as a farm hand and bronco buster (about which I was very proud!).
